Whether your child has aspirations of becoming a writer, or has completely unrelated goals, creative writing is an invaluable skill to develop. It helps children in communicating themselves effectively and can actually be quite fun. Here are a few activities from a private school in Surrey to practise the skill with your child.

Journal writing
A nice way to introduce writing into your child’s routine is journaling. If successful and they enjoy it, they will get writing on a more frequent basis which in turn will help them improve on their writing skills.

Story Writing
Another activity you can explore is story writing. Your child can create their own novel, like those that they like reading. They will have full creative freedom and can base their stories on whatever they like. This can be a tricky task, especially if it’s not something they've done before so you may need to help them create a skeleton before they can get writing.

Build Their Vocabulary
Writing becomes easier when you have a good bank of words at your disposal. So, to help enrich their writing, look at ways that you can grow your child’s vocabulary. One of the best ways to do this is to read often. As they read, children simultaneously learn new words and understand what they mean through the context they are used in.

A Letter

This could be to family members that live across the country, or their headmaster. The point of this activity is to teach children how to structure letters correctly and help them in practising their writing skills.

To Conclude
While these are great activities to explore with children, be sure they are ones that your child is actually interested in. Perhaps incorporate their favourite tv shows, or a theme that they can easily write about.

Children can express their gratitude quite simply by remembering to say please and thank you, but it isn’t the only way that they can go about making those around them feel special. We’ve teamed up with a private school in Kent to share a few sincere ways that children can develop an appreciation for those around them and express how grateful they are.

Thank You Letters
While pre-made cards are pretty, there’s something about a handwritten letter. Taking the time to write a handwritten letter is a thoughtful way of showing someone you appreciate them. Your child can do this for their teachers and others in their life they have to be thankful for.

A Gratitude Jar
This is more of a personal act but helps children in reflecting on what they have to be grateful for and appreciating the things/people they have in their life. What your child will need to do is make a note of all the things they have to be thankful for and enter them in a jar.

Keeping a Gratitude Journal
Similarly, if they wish, they can keep a log of the things that make them happy in a gratitude journal.

Helping Others
In addition to exercising gratitude, children should be taught that it’s better to give than it is to receive. To help them form this outlook and a desire to help others, look for ways that they can give back. That might be through giving to charity, or volunteering for a good cause. It can be an eye-opening experience and allow them to see how much we take for granted.

Of course, as with all the lessons you try and impart on your child, you should be sure to follow them yourself and set a good example. Remember to use your manners, show appreciation to those around you and give back where you can.

“Curriculum” is a word you probably have heard floating around. It refers to lessons and assessments that children are taught at school. By studying it, parents can learn how best to support children in their learning. However, it can be quite the minefield to understand. To help you, we have some guidance below from a prep school in Potters Bar.

What Is the National Curriculum
Most schools follow what is known as the “national curriculum” which outlines the minimum teaching standards all schools must meet. This is otherwise known as the “British curriculum” and details of it can be found over on the GOV.UK website. The exceptions to this rule are independent schools that follow their own, and international schools who adopt the IB (International baccalaureate) curriculum.

Understanding Their School Curriculum
We suggest that you have a look at their school website as the curriculum can vary depending on location (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own which they follow) and the kind of school they attend.

Secondary School and Exam Boards
Things become a little more complicated when children move up to secondary school. There are not only the mandatory set of subjects that they will study, but also the options that they will get to choose for their GCSEs and differences depending on the exam board they follow. As well as checking with their school, we also recommend taking a look at the course specifications shared by their exam boards. Those that are typically used here in the UK are AQA, OCR, Pearson/Edexcel, WJEC (the Welsh exam board), CCEA and SQA.

If this is a grey area that you need a little support in understanding, it may be something to discuss at your child’s next parents evening. Plus, you will be able to learn about your child’s progress in relation to where they should be.

When planning a children’s birthday party, there are a few things that you will need to consider. First off, you will need a rough estimate of the guests you will be expecting so that you can organise food and make adequate preparations. Entertainment also is a must, and possibly one of the most important things to organise for a children’s birthday party. To help you in planning, here a few ideas from a school providing venue hire in Watford.

1. Pool Party
If weather permits, you can set up a pool for the children to splash around and have fun. Alternatively, you may decide to opt for a swimming centre with a large enough swimming pool and floats to accommodate.

2. Hire a Clown
Another great option is to hire a clown. They are joyful cartoon-like characters that make children laugh and can give them something to remember the day by. However, there’s the chance that your guests may be afraid of them. If you are thinking of inviting one to your party, be sure to check with other parents.

3. Set Up a Craft Table
Children love crafting. For the fun element of the day, you can set up a table for them to create friendship bracelets and other cool makes. This will give them something to take home and make the experience a memorable one.

4. Soft Play
Soft play centres make the perfect location for early birthday parties. Children have lots to keep them entertained from climbing frames and ball pits to small rides. Many also have catering available which can make their party even easier to organise.

5. Musical Chairs
Classic birthday party games like musical chairs always work a charm. All you will need is a playlist, enough chairs for your guests and the space for everyone to be able to get around

Do any of these with a photo booth rental Austin, or locally based company present so that you can capture all of the best moments for the day.
